Standardized JSON format

Unlike WHOIS (plain text, inconsistent), RDAP returns structured JSON data that is easy to parse and machine-readable. Defined by IETF RFC 9083.

Direct registry queries

RDAP queries the authoritative registry server directly — Verisign for .com/.net, PIR for .org, Identity Digital for 200+ new TLDs. Data comes straight from the source.

Domain status codes explained

Active domains show “clientTransferProhibited”. Expiring domains enter “redemptionPeriod” then “pendingDelete”. A 404 response means the domain has dropped and is available for registration.

What each domain status means and what action to take

Registered
Active — domain is registered and owned
The domain has a current registrant. RDAP returns full data: registrar, expiry date, nameservers. Cannot be registered by others.
Redemption
Expired — previous owner can still reclaim
The domain expired and entered the redemption grace period (typically up to 30 days). The previous registrant can still renew at a higher cost. If not renewed, it proceeds to pending delete.
ID Grace
Identity Digital extended grace period
Some registries (Identity Digital: .online, .site, .store, 267+ TLDs) add an extra grace period after expiry. The domain is held for ~30 days before entering pendingDelete.
Pending Delete
Drop imminent — will be released within 1-5 days
The domain is in its final deletion countdown. It cannot be renewed. Within 1-5 days it will be deleted from the registry and become available for registration.
Available
RDAP returned 404 — domain has dropped from the registry
The RDAP server returned HTTP 404, meaning the domain is not in the registry. It may be available for registration through any registrar.
